1. Use side shields to keep granular pesticides and fertilizers
off of non turf areas such as sidewalks, driveways, walks and
curbs. Remove any excess from these areas with brooms and blowers.
There may even be local regulations that require you to do
this.
2. Provide your employees with working Personal Protective Equipment
and make sure they wear it! Riding on application equipment does
not lessen the PPE requirements unless specifically stated on
the label.
3. OISC will continue to conduct inspections at lawn care facilities
in 2008.
a. Clean and organize pesticide storage areas.
b. Insure that all pesticides are labeled and stored in their
proper containers. Specific best management practices for storing
pesticides can be found in the Purdue Pesticide Programs publication
PPP-61, Pesticide Safety Tips for the Workplace and Farm.
4. Remember, passing the core or category exam does not automatically
license you or your employees. You must follow through and submit
an application for credentials along with the appropriate fee
to OISC.
5. Inspect pesticide application equipment regularly to insure
that it is functioning properly and that it is not leaking.
