    The Green Industry Alliance Welcomes
    New Government Affairs Representative

The Indiana Professional Lawn & Landscape Association  (IPLLA) and The Indiana Irrigation Contractors Council (IICC) are full partners in the Indiana Green Industry Alliance.  The Alliance represents green industry associations in our dealings  with the Indiana State Legislature and other state level governmental agencies.  The GIA contracts with The Corydon Group to provide us with that representation and we are pleased to announce their employment of a new Associate to work with our industry.

Jason Johnson has joined the Corydon Group as that Associate.  Jason holds a BA in Recreation, Sports Management in Business Administration from Indiana State University and also holds a Masters degree in Sports Management from ISU.   From 2008 thru mid-2010 he served as a Graduate Assistant for Recreation Sports and Athletic Fields at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, IN.  He then served as West Central Indiana Field Manager for the House Republican Campaign Committee and then as a Legislative Assistant for the Indiana House of Representatives.    His new post with the Corydon Group puts his talents to work for the private sector including the Green Industry Alliance.

IPLLA welcomes Jason and look forward to you meeting him at The Summer Field Day on August 27th at the Hendricks County Fairgrounds.  See you then.

    Indiana Irrigation Contractors Council
    Joins Green Industry Alliance

The Indiana Irrigation Contractors Council (IICC) has announced that it has officially joined as a voting member of the Green Industry Alliance.  The Council represents the interests of irrigation contractors throughout the Hoosier state and is a part of the Indiana Professional Lawn & Landscape Association.

Formed more than eight years ago, the Green Industry Alliance acts to promote the ongoing involvement of various parts of the industry in government and regulatory affairs at the state level.   In this role, the Alliance employs the services of The Corydon Group as its government affairs representative at the statehouse.

In addition to the Irrigation Council, voting members of the Green Industry Alliance include The Indiana Nursery & Landscape Association (INLA), the Indianapolis Landscape Association (ILA), and the Indiana Professional Lawn & Landscape Association (IPLLA).

In addition to involvement in regulatory affairs, the IICC also is stepping-up its role in industry education and will sponsor a Certified Irrigation Technician Training program in conjunction with the national Irrigation Association.  That program will be held in Carmel, IN on March 26, 2015 and limited registration is now available by going to iplla.com/CIT-March-2015.  The program offers the opportunity to earn national certification as a Certified Irrigation Technician (CIT) through the IA and is a major step forward in promoting professionalism within the irrigation industry.

    Pesticide Review Board

    UPDATE - March 2014

    To:  All IPLLA Members

The Indiana Pesticide Review Board met at the Daniels Turf Center at Purdue University on Friday February 28, 2014.  Below is a brief summary of the items on the agenda.

    • 1.      The Office of Indiana State Chemist is conducting an online review of pesticide products entering Indiana. In a number of cases, product manufactured outside of Indiana and then shipped to customers in the state, is not properly registered either with the Office of Indiana State Chemist, or with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, or both.  Enforcement action is being taken where required.

    • 2.      OISC field investigators reported a number violations in which unlicensed applicators were making weed control applications without being properly supervised.

    • 3.      We also see some violations in which a person who passes the Registered Technician exam, then fails to apply for his or her actual license.  Once an employee passes the RT exam, it is then the employer’s responsibility to apply for the license itself. This entails payment of $45.00 for the annual license fee.  Until that license is obtained, the employee is not a Registered Technician.

    • 4.      The State Chemist continues to investigate misbranded products for Bed Bug control that are being sold over the internet.  Such products sometimes are found to carry misleading or false statements regarding the quality of control offered.  In other cases, the product uses an EPA or USDA logo on their packaging to imply that the product has received some sort of endorsement from either of these two agencies.

    • 5.      Representatives of Category 12 (Wood Destroying Pest Inspectors) appeared before the Board to object to the requirement that such inspectors must carry Errors and Omissions Coverage in addition to their normal liability insurance.  The group indicated that the coverage is overly expensive and the deductible too high.  The coverage is currently required to protect property owners from damage that may occur as a result of an inaccurate wood destroying pest inspection.  Their objection will be further discussed at a future meeting of the Board.

Exam Testing Only Opportunity on April 24,2013

The Office of Indiana State Chemist will offer a Core Testing Opportunity at Primo West Conference Center in Plainfield, IN. on April 24th.

This is an excellent opportunity to have your new applicators take the core at a central location.  Primo West is at the intersection of I 70 and SR 267 just west of the Indianapolis International Airport.

We would emphasize that this is testing only and that no training will be offered prior to the examination.

Applicator Licensing Testing at IPLLA Regional Workshops

IPLLA’s Regional Workshops are scheduled for February 2013 and pre-registration is coming in daily for these popular events.  Workshops are scheduled for:

February 12 –The Hotel Fort Wayne (formerly the Ft. Wayne Marriott)

February 13 – Merrillville at the Radisson Star Plaza

February 19 - Seymour at the Jackson County Learning Center

February 20 - Plainfield at Primo West Conference Center

For the first time ever, we will be offering you the opportunity to have employees take the Registered Technician or Core Exam at Ft. Wayne, Merrillville, and Seymour.  The employee must be registered for the respective workshop, but there is no additional cost to then take the Registered Technician (RT) exam.

Your employee can attend the morning educational sessions and then take the RT Exam in the afternoon.  Should they pass the exam, they will receive Continuing Credit Hours (CCH’s) for those sessions which they attended that morning.  This is quite an opportunity for your employees to take the exam in your local area and we hope many of you will take advantage of it.

Remember, this is exam only and any training materials can be purchased through the Purdue Extension Education Store by call (765) 6794.

So, go online now at WWW.IPLLA.COM and get registered for the workshop of your choice, and the opportunity to have your employees take the applicator exam.  If you have already registered to attend the workshop, then you can simply still sign up your employee for testing.

We’ll see you soon at the 2013 IPLLA Regional Workshops.
