2016 Legislative Update– January 23, 2016

Let’s take a break from legislative matters to provide you with a listing of Indiana State Chemist Compliance Priorities for 2016.  The use and application of pesticides, in Indiana, is regulated by their office on a statewide basis.  Each year, the State Chemist establishes a list of those items which they feel require special attention by lawn and landscape operators during the upcoming season.  Those for this year include:

  • Operators should become acquainted with Indiana’s Pollinator Protection Plan now available at http://www.oisc.purdue.edu/pesticide/p3_activities.html.  You need to thoroughly read labels of all insecticides you use to see if, and how, they address pollinator protection.
  • Be sure to use shields to keep granular pesticides and fertilizers off non-turf areas and remove any that might land on such areas.  This is an often repeated concern, but apparently is needed and thus is included on this year’s list of priorities.
  • Understand and follow the supervision requirements for non-licensed and/or non-registered applicators.  Be sure that applicators have a site assessment fact sheet, a label for any product being used, the required personal protective equipment (PPE), and a means to establish direct voice communication with supervisors. Remember that unlicensed and non-registered applicators require on-site supervision by a Certified Applicator.
  • If applications are to be made to the property of a school, all applicators must adhere to the “school rule” which can be found at https://www.isco.purdue.edu/pesticide/pest_use_at_school.html  .
  • Provide all applicators with label mandated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and see to it that they are properly used throughout the work day.

Each of these priorities will be covered in more detail by the Office of Indiana State Chemist at our upcoming series of IPLLA Regional Workshops in Columbus, Plainfield, Ft. Wayne, and Merrillville during February.  For more information and registration, please go to IPLLA.COM and click on EVENTS.
